What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers a mid-level of care between inpatient treatment and standard outpatient therapy. It’s ideal for people who need more support than weekly therapy but don’t require 24/7 supervision.

At our IOP in Austin, you’ll participate in several hours of treatment per week—typically across multiple days—focusing on therapy, relapse prevention, and developing healthy coping strategies. Our program is tailored to your unique recovery goals and can include:

How is Addiction Treated?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction is a chronic disorder that can be treated  successfully. When someone stops using drugs and alcohol and is living a meaningful, productive life, they’re in recovery. Addiction treatment is similar to how other chronic diseases are treated. Treatment isn’t considered a cure, but instead, it is a way to manage symptoms and avoid the disruptive effects of the disease of addiction on your brain and behavior. After a treatment program, you’re no longer controlled by addiction; instead, you’re in control and living a self-directed life. Some of the principles of an effective addiction treatment program can include:

Withdrawl
Treating withdrawal, which can include a variety of emotional and physical symptoms. Some medications can be part of withdrawal treatment to ease the symptoms and make the experience less uncomfortable so you’re better prepared to move into the next phase of your treatment. It’s critical that you stay in treatment for long enough. Your brain and body have to adapt to the absence of drugs or alcohol. With adequate time in treatment, you begin to be able to focus on counseling and psychotherapies that are part of your recovery plan.

Treatment programs should work on helping you avoid relapse. Relapse is always possible, but through research and science, we know that stress cues linked with drug use can be a major trigger for relapse. Stress cues can include people, places, things, and moods or emotions. Some therapies can be part of a treatment program that interferes with the triggers so you can maintain your recovery.

The role of Behavioral Therapy

While medications are available to help with specific symptoms of drug and alcohol dependence and withdrawal, the core of most treatment programs relies on behavioral therapies. Behavioral therapies help people struggling with addiction understand and change their behaviors and attitudes, especially substance use-related ones.

Behavioral therapy teaches you how to manage stress and triggers that would otherwise lead to a relapse.

If you’d like to learn more about effective, evidence-based addiction treatment, contact Ava Recovery. We are a facility in Austin, Texas, and we believe recovery is possible for everyone.

Behavioral therapies can be helpful on their own, or they can be combined with medications. Some of the types of behavioral therapies used in addiction treatment include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy so clients can start recognizing, coping, and avoiding situations where they would most likely use substances.
  • Motivational enhancement therapy relies on strategies to maximize someone’s readiness to change their behavior.
  • Contingency management is a behavioral therapy integrating positive reinforcement, like rewards, for continuing treatment and remaining free of substances.
  • Family therapy can be integrated into some treatment plans when appropriate. During family therapy, the focus is on addressing the substance use patterns to improve the functionality of the entire family unit.

Our Expert Services

The Continuum of Care Model

The continuum of care model means that treatment is individualized, and there is a wide range of offerings, no matter your stage of recovery. Without following a continuum of care, someone will likely fall through the system’s cracks, worsening their outcomes. A continuum of care means you step down to lower or less intensive care levels as you’re ready and working through your recovery. As part of this treatment model, your team adjusts your care and personalizes it to your specific needs during every step, even after leaving the facility. Some of the services that can be part of a continuum of care are:

Inpatient hospitalization is the highest care level for someone initially needing an intensive treatment level. This would usually be a short-term service in a hospital offering acute care. More common for someone to start with is inpatient or residential treatment. Residential treatment provides 24-hour care and treatment in a supportive, safe, and structured environment.
Partial hospitalization programs or PHPs provide outpatient treatment, often five days a week for up to six hours daily. It’s still an intensive level of treatment, but most of these programs allow you to live offsite and return home at the end of your treatment day.
Intensive outpatient programs offer more flexibility in scheduling and accountability for your recovery. At an Austin IOP, you might plan that your treatment will last a few hours a day, two or three days a week.
Traditional outpatient programs are highly flexible, requiring a minimal weekly time commitment. Usually, the goal of a traditional outpatient program is to keep you connected with your recovery and support system as you’re rebuilding your life.
Aftercare services help you plan for a return to your daily life. Aftercare planning might include relapse-prevention strategies and plans and connections with resources and peer support in your community.

Someone receiving treatment might also require medical detoxification. During that time, as you’re going through withdrawal and your body is detoxing itself from drugs and alcohol, you may need medical care in a supervised environment.

There’s also something called medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, which can be part of any of the levels of care mentioned above.

If you’re seeking an IOP program in Austin, Ava Recovery can help.

Currently, we offer detoxification and residential programs, but once you complete a higher level of care with us, we will work with you to plan the next steps of your treatment, which could include an IOP program in Austin.
